Christmas Movie Sweaters: Elf, Christmas Vacation, Die Hard and More

Why Is The Carpet All Wet Todd Knitted Christmas Sweater

Some people want a reindeer on their Christmas sweater. Others want a line from the film they watch every single December. For the second group, a movie sweater is the perfect in-joke: meaningless to half the room and instantly recognised by the other half.

We’ve grouped every film and TV sweater in our catalogue by what it references, and noted which are properly knitted and which are printed onto sweatshirts – a difference that matters more than you might think.

Knitted or printed? It changes the joke

The same reference often comes in two very different forms. Knitted versions tend to hide the joke inside a traditional fair isle pattern – reindeer bands that turn out to be AT-AT walkers, or a leg lamp standing among the snowflakes. Printed sweatshirts usually go straight for the quote in big letters. Knitted is warmer and looks more like a “real” Christmas jumper; printed is lighter, cheaper to wash and reads from further away. Each sweater’s page on this site tells you which you’re getting.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

The single most represented film in the catalogue. The best of the bunch are a pair of properly knitted jumpers carrying the two halves of the neighbours’ exchange – “Why is the carpet all wet, Todd?” and “I don’t know, Margo!” – which work brilliantly worn by a couple. There’s also the Griswold station wagon with the enormous tree on its roof (captioned with Clark’s line about bending over), and a clever sweatshirt whose fair isle bands are made entirely from film props: moose mugs, the squirrel, Cousin Eddie’s RV.

Elf

Three very different takes on Buddy. “SANTA! OMG! I KNOW HIM!” captures the film’s most quoted moment; a softer blue knit features the narwhal and its farewell (“Bye, Buddy. Hope you find your dad!”); and a cream and green jumper simply reads “Raised by Elves” around Buddy’s grinning face.

A Christmas Story

The leg lamp is the undisputed star. You can have it properly knitted with “FRAGILE” across the yoke and the Parker family’s spectacles hidden in the hem border, as a printed sweatshirt with warning triangles, or with “You were always jealous of this lamp” – a design that sneaks the bunny suit, the air rifle and the frozen flagpole into its borders.

Die Hard

For everyone who insists it’s a Christmas film. The Nakatomi Plaza Christmas Party 1988 design comes as a knitted jumper, a sweatshirt and a t-shirt, all in the same eighties purple-and-teal palette with little helicopters worked into the pattern. “Happy Trails, Hans” is the more direct option.

Home Alone, The Grinch and more

“Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal” appears on a properly knitted navy jumper. The Grinch turns up in several forms – peering through a holly wreath, asking you to “define naughty”, or as a full costume kit with fur gloves and a beard. Jack Skellington represents The Nightmare Before Christmas for anyone who celebrates both October and December.

Star Wars, Marvel and other franchises

Star Wars is the most popular franchise in the range: the Millennium Falcon, a Battle of Hoth scene with AT-ATs and tauntauns, Darth Vader finding your lack of cheer disturbing, Yoda’s “Silent Night, Jedi Night”, and The Child in its floating pod. You’ll also find Harry Potter house crests, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Captain America, Snoopy, SpongeBob, Pokemon, Shrek’s Gingerbread Man and Pickle Rick. Browse them all in our Movies & TV collection.

Choosing the right one

Pick the reference your crowd will actually recognise – a deep-cut quote is only funny if someone gets it. If you’re buying for a couple, the Christmas Vacation pairs and the naughty/nice style sweaters split one joke across two people. And if you want something you can wear beyond one party, go for a knitted version where the reference is woven into the pattern rather than printed across the chest.
