National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day 2026: Date, Ideas and Picks

Light-Up Reindeer Christmas Sweater Set with Glasses and Antlers

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day falls on the third Friday of December each year. In 2026, that’s Friday 18 December – the last Friday before Christmas week for most workplaces and schools, which is exactly why so many office parties and dress-down days land on it.

Here’s how to make the most of it, whether you’re organising something or just need a sweater in time.

Ideas for the day

At work

  • Run a contest with categories – ugliest overall, best light-up, best joke, best team or pair – so more people have a chance of winning. Our guide to winning an ugly sweater contest explains what tends to impress judges.
  • Tie it to a good cause. Many workplaces ask for a small donation to wear a Christmas sweater for the day, with the money going to a charity of their choice.
  • Take a team photo. It’s the one day of the year everyone is dressed for it.

At home and at school

  • Family photo day. If you’ve been planning to get matching sweaters for the Christmas card, this is a natural deadline.
  • Movie night. Pair a film-reference sweater with the film itself – Elf, Home Alone or Christmas Vacation.
  • A sweater swap. Everyone brings a sweater they’re done with and leaves with someone else’s.

Get your sweater in time

The biggest mistake is leaving it too late. Popular designs and sizes sell out through December, and delivery slows down as Christmas approaches. As a rough rule, order your sweater by the start of December, and earlier if you need several matching sizes for a family or team. Delivery times are set by the retailer, so check the estimate on the listing before you buy.

Picks for the day

To win the office contest

To match with your family or partner

To be festive but office-appropriate

Not everyone wants to wear tinsel to a meeting. These are some of our lowest-rated sweaters on the ugliness scale – festive, but perfectly respectable.

Is it the same as Christmas Jumper Day?

Not quite. In the UK, Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day is a separate fundraising event, usually held earlier in December. In the US, National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day on the third Friday of December is the main event. Plenty of people celebrate both – there’s no rule against wearing a Christmas sweater twice.

How to Win an Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest

Light-Up Dancing Christmas Tree Sweater with Tinsel

Every office has one: the ugly Christmas sweater contest where half the entrants turn up in a nice fair isle and the prize goes to whoever looks most like they lost a fight with a Christmas tree. If you intend to win, you need to plan like it.

We’ve rated every sweater on this site for ugliness using a fixed set of rules – and those rules happen to line up closely with what wins contests. Here’s how to use them.

What judges actually reward

Having watched a lot of these contests, the winners almost always tick several of these boxes:

  1. It lights up. Nothing beats working lights in a dim room. It also makes you visible in every photo.
  2. It’s three-dimensional. Tinsel, hanging baubles, pom-poms, 3D scarves and attached bells. Judges touch things.
  3. There’s no plain space. An all-over pattern beats a single motif on a plain background.
  4. There’s a joke. A pun, a costume effect or a slogan gets a laugh, and a laugh gets votes.
  5. It commits. Hats, headbands, glasses and matching socks turn a sweater into an outfit.

Our Ugliness Rating gives a bauble for each of the first four, so a sweater’s score is a decent predictor of its contest chances.

The highest-rated sweaters on the site

The only sweater to score five baubles is a black roll-neck with a real gold tinsel tree, working LEDs and a “GET LIT” slogan. Several four-bauble options come with full accessory sets – antler headbands, novelty glasses, light-up beanies and socks – which solves the “commit” problem in one purchase.

Win with a joke instead

Not every contest is won on sparkle. If your crowd appreciates a laugh, a costume or trompe-l’oeil sweatshirt can steal it: fake Santa suits with printed six-packs, a fake cardigan worn over a very hairy chest, Santa riding a T-rex through space, or a hooded jumper that turns you into one of Santa’s elves, complete with pointed ears.

A word of warning: know your audience. Some joke sweaters are crude, and what wins at the pub may not go down well at a family party or in an office. We’ve removed the most explicit designs from this site, and the descriptions of the rest tell you plainly when a joke is aimed at adults.

Win with a game

An interactive sweater gets people involved, which is the surest way to get their vote. Our Games collection includes a sweater with a padded dartboard and velcro balls, one with real plastic cups stitched on for wearable beer pong, and a single enormous sweater built for two people at once.

Contest-day tips

  • Buy early. The most outrageous designs sell out first, and delivery gets slower through December.
  • Test the lights the night before and bring spare batteries.
  • Wear something thin underneath. Tinsel-heavy knits are warm and a little scratchy.
  • Accessorise. A Santa hat, antlers or light-up glasses can push a good sweater over the top.
  • Team up. Couples and group entries – matching pairs, two-part jokes, a two-person sweater – often get a separate round of applause.

Knitted vs Printed Christmas Sweaters: Which Should You Buy?

Fragile Leg Lamp Knitted Christmas Sweater

Search for “ugly Christmas sweater” on any marketplace and you’ll get a mix of two very different things: genuinely knitted jumpers, and printed sweatshirts designed to look like knitted jumpers. The listings rarely make the difference clear. In fact, the word “knitted” appears in the titles of plenty of sweatshirts that are nothing of the kind.

After checking every sweater on this site photo by photo, roughly half turned out to be knitted and half printed. Neither is better – they suit different situations. Here’s how to tell them apart and choose.

How to tell from the photos

  • Look at the texture. A real knit shows individual stitches – little V shapes – especially in close-ups. A printed sweatshirt is smooth, even when the print imitates stitches.
  • Check the edges of the pattern. Knitted patterns have slightly stepped, pixel-like edges. Printed designs have perfectly smooth curves and photographic detail that no knitting machine could produce.
  • Look at the cuffs and hem. Knits have ribbing that’s part of the garment. Sweatshirts have a separate ribbed band sewn on, and the body fabric is plain jersey or fleece.
  • Photo-real images are always printed. Kittens, hairy chests, galaxy backgrounds and film stills can only be printed.

Every sweater on this site carries a “Knitted” or “Printed” badge on its page, so you don’t have to squint at the photos.

Same joke, two ways

The clearest way to see the difference is to compare the same reference made both ways. Here are three pairs from the catalogue – the knitted version first, then the printed one.

The knitted Christmas Vacation jumper works its quote into a traditional fair isle; the printed tees are lighter and made to be worn as a pair. The knitted leg lamp is a proper winter jumper with hidden details in the border; the sweatshirt is bolder and softer. The same goes for the Die Hard Nakatomi Plaza design.

When to choose knitted

  • You’ll be outdoors – Christmas markets, carolling, walks to see the lights. Knits are much warmer.
  • You want to wear it more than once. A good fair isle knit passes as ordinary winter knitwear through January.
  • You want 3D extras. Tinsel, pom-poms, attached baubles and working lights almost always come on knitted sweaters.
  • It’s for a photo. Knits look richer and more “Christmassy” in pictures.

When to choose printed

  • You run warm, or the office heating is fierce. A sweatshirt is far more comfortable for a full day indoors.
  • You want a specific joke or image. Detailed slogans, film stills, photographs and trompe-l’oeil costumes – fake Santa suits, fake cardigans over hairy chests – only work in print.
  • Easy washing matters. Printed sweatshirts can usually go in the machine; many knits need gentler care.
  • Budget. Printed designs are often cheaper, and softer against the skin for anyone who finds wool itchy.

A quick word on “3D” and “fake”

Marketplace listings often describe printed designs as “3D”, meaning a realistic image rather than anything raised. Genuinely three-dimensional sweaters – with tinsel, bells or cups stitched on – are a different thing, and our Ugliness Rating gives them an extra bauble. If you want real texture, look for words like “attached”, “tinsel” or “pom-pom” in our descriptions rather than “3D” in the title.

The short answer

Knitted for warmth, photos and wearing again. Printed for comfort, jokes and the washing machine. Browse our Sweatshirts & Hoodies for printed designs, or sort the whole catalogue and look for the “Knitted” badge.

Matching Family Christmas Sweaters: How to Get It Right

Totatuit Matching Family Reindeer Fair Isle Christmas Sweater

A matching family Christmas sweater is one of those ideas that sounds simple and turns out to be surprisingly fiddly. You need a design that exists in both adult and children’s sizes, in stock, in the right size for everyone – and that still looks like a match when it arrives, rather than four vaguely similar jumpers.

Here’s what we’ve learned from checking every family sweater in our catalogue, and the ones we’d pick.

What makes a real matching family sweater

Plenty of listings use the words “family matching” in their title without actually being made in children’s sizes. We only include a sweater in our Family Matching collection if its photos show it made for both adults and kids in the same design. Before you order anywhere, look for:

  • A group photo. The best listings show two adults and one or two children wearing the set together. That’s the clearest sign the pattern is identical across sizes.
  • Separate size options for adults and children. On most retailer pages you choose “Men”, “Women”, “Boys”, “Girls” or “Kids” as a style, then a size. Make sure the style you want exists for every family member.
  • The same colourway. Some designs come in several colours, and the children’s version isn’t always available in all of them.

Our favourite family sets

Traditional fair isle dominates this category, and for good reason: reindeer, snowflakes and fir trees look good on everyone and photograph beautifully for the Christmas card.

A few stand out. There’s a navy and red fair isle set shown on a whole family of four, a black version whose white pattern reads particularly sharply in photos, and a button-through cardigan version – easier for children to take on and off during a long Christmas Day. For something less traditional, a black knit is covered in Santas, gingerbread men and wreaths, and a red knit carries one big friendly reindeer face.

If your children have opinions

Fair isle is lovely, but it’s a hard sell to a seven-year-old. Some family designs are built around characters instead – a T-rex wearing antlers and tangled in fairy lights is our favourite, and there’s a gingerbread man holding a giant lollipop, and a soft pink polar bear surrounded by penguins in Santa hats. The whole family can wear these, and the children might actually want to.

Light-up family sets

A couple of family designs have working LED lights, including a tree whose baubles glow and a reindeer with light-up antlers and nose. They’re a hit with children, but remember that each sweater needs its own batteries – multiply accordingly.

Getting the sizes right

  • Check every size chart separately. Adult and children’s sizes on the same listing often follow different charts, and sizes vary between brands.
  • Knitted fair isle has less stretch than a sweatshirt. If someone is between sizes, or you want room to layer over a shirt, size up.
  • Order early. Popular sizes of popular family designs sell out through November and December, and it only takes one missing size to break the set.
  • Keep the receipts. Returns and exchanges are handled by the retailer you buy from, so check their policy before ordering several sizes at once.

Beyond the family photo

If it’s just the two of you, our Couples collection has matching pairs and two-part jokes. For the children on their own, the Kids collection includes the children’s versions of many designs, plus light-up reindeer with real 3D scarves.

Christmas Movie Sweaters: Elf, Christmas Vacation, Die Hard and More

Why Is The Carpet All Wet Todd Knitted Christmas Sweater

Some people want a reindeer on their Christmas sweater. Others want a line from the film they watch every single December. For the second group, a movie sweater is the perfect in-joke: meaningless to half the room and instantly recognised by the other half.

We’ve grouped every film and TV sweater in our catalogue by what it references, and noted which are properly knitted and which are printed onto sweatshirts – a difference that matters more than you might think.

Knitted or printed? It changes the joke

The same reference often comes in two very different forms. Knitted versions tend to hide the joke inside a traditional fair isle pattern – reindeer bands that turn out to be AT-AT walkers, or a leg lamp standing among the snowflakes. Printed sweatshirts usually go straight for the quote in big letters. Knitted is warmer and looks more like a “real” Christmas jumper; printed is lighter, cheaper to wash and reads from further away. Each sweater’s page on this site tells you which you’re getting.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

The single most represented film in the catalogue. The best of the bunch are a pair of properly knitted jumpers carrying the two halves of the neighbours’ exchange – “Why is the carpet all wet, Todd?” and “I don’t know, Margo!” – which work brilliantly worn by a couple. There’s also the Griswold station wagon with the enormous tree on its roof (captioned with Clark’s line about bending over), and a clever sweatshirt whose fair isle bands are made entirely from film props: moose mugs, the squirrel, Cousin Eddie’s RV.

Elf

Three very different takes on Buddy. “SANTA! OMG! I KNOW HIM!” captures the film’s most quoted moment; a softer blue knit features the narwhal and its farewell (“Bye, Buddy. Hope you find your dad!”); and a cream and green jumper simply reads “Raised by Elves” around Buddy’s grinning face.

A Christmas Story

The leg lamp is the undisputed star. You can have it properly knitted with “FRAGILE” across the yoke and the Parker family’s spectacles hidden in the hem border, as a printed sweatshirt with warning triangles, or with “You were always jealous of this lamp” – a design that sneaks the bunny suit, the air rifle and the frozen flagpole into its borders.

Die Hard

For everyone who insists it’s a Christmas film. The Nakatomi Plaza Christmas Party 1988 design comes as a knitted jumper, a sweatshirt and a t-shirt, all in the same eighties purple-and-teal palette with little helicopters worked into the pattern. “Happy Trails, Hans” is the more direct option.

Home Alone, The Grinch and more

“Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal” appears on a properly knitted navy jumper. The Grinch turns up in several forms – peering through a holly wreath, asking you to “define naughty”, or as a full costume kit with fur gloves and a beard. Jack Skellington represents The Nightmare Before Christmas for anyone who celebrates both October and December.

Star Wars, Marvel and other franchises

Star Wars is the most popular franchise in the range: the Millennium Falcon, a Battle of Hoth scene with AT-ATs and tauntauns, Darth Vader finding your lack of cheer disturbing, Yoda’s “Silent Night, Jedi Night”, and The Child in its floating pod. You’ll also find Harry Potter house crests, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Captain America, Snoopy, SpongeBob, Pokemon, Shrek’s Gingerbread Man and Pickle Rick. Browse them all in our Movies & TV collection.

Choosing the right one

Pick the reference your crowd will actually recognise – a deep-cut quote is only funny if someone gets it. If you’re buying for a couple, the Christmas Vacation pairs and the naughty/nice style sweaters split one joke across two people. And if you want something you can wear beyond one party, go for a knitted version where the reference is woven into the pattern rather than printed across the chest.

The Best Light-Up Ugly Christmas Sweaters (That Actually Light Up)

JOYIN Get Lit Light-Up Tinsel Tree Roll Neck Christmas Sweater

A light-up sweater is the fastest route to being the most noticeable person at a Christmas party. It is also the category where online listings are least trustworthy. While checking every sweater on this site photo by photo, we found “light-up” sweaters where the lights were simply printed on, “LED” sweatshirts with no electronics at all, and several listings that turned out to be exactly the same sweater sold under three different names.

So this guide does two things: it explains what to look for before you buy a light-up sweater, and it picks out the ones that genuinely deliver.

How to tell if the lights are real

Marketplace titles are written for search engines, so “light up” often appears in the title of sweaters that don’t light up at all. Before you order, check the photos for three things:

  • A battery pack or switch. Real LED sweaters are powered by a small battery box, usually hidden in an inside pocket near the hem. If one of the gallery photos shows it, that’s the clearest proof.
  • A photo with the lights on. Genuine light-up listings almost always include a shot of the lights glowing, often against a dark background. If every picture looks flat and evenly lit, be suspicious.
  • Raised bulbs. Real LEDs sit slightly proud of the knit. Printed “lights” are perfectly flat and often have a glossy, cartoon look.

Every sweater in our Light-Up collection has passed that check. Where we found a “light-up” sweater that wasn’t, we moved it to the right category and said so in its description.

Our top-rated light-up sweaters

These are the light-up sweaters with the highest Ugliness Ratings in the catalogue. The rating rewards working lights, anything physically attached (tinsel, baubles, pom-poms, 3D scarves), all-over patterns and jokes – so these are the ones that commit hardest.

At the very top is a black roll-neck knit with a Christmas tree built from real gold tinsel, hung with working LEDs and a “GET LIT” slogan – the only sweater on the site to score the full five baubles. Close behind are a cartoon tree in a Santa hat wrapped in actual tinsel, and a llama in sunglasses draped in a glowing garland, which looks like a sensible fair isle jumper right up until someone flicks the switch.

Sweaters that come as a full set

Some of the best value light-up options arrive as a complete outfit. Two of our favourites are sold with matching accessories: one comes with a padded antler headband, novelty “Merry Christmas” glasses and socks; another includes a light-up “OH DEER!” beanie and patterned socks. If you are putting together a last-minute costume for a party or contest, a set saves you hunting for the pieces separately. Always check the listing for exactly what is included in the option you pick, as sets sometimes vary by colour or size.

Light-up sweaters for couples

Several light-up designs are made in matching men’s and women’s cuts, so two people can glow together. The listings for these usually show a couple wearing them side by side – a good sign that both versions share the same design rather than a loose resemblance.

Practical things to know before you buy

Batteries

Most LED sweaters run on small button-cell or AA batteries, and many listings don’t say whether batteries are included. It is worth assuming they aren’t and having spares ready, particularly if the sweater is a gift that will be opened on the day.

Washing

Always follow the care label, but as a general rule: take the battery pack out before washing, turn the sweater inside out, and hand-wash or use a gentle cold cycle. Dry it flat rather than in a tumble dryer – heat and tumbling are hard on both the wiring and any attached tinsel.

Comfort

Light-up sweaters are usually knitted, and the LED wiring adds a little stiffness. If you run warm or you’ll be indoors all evening, a light-up sweater worn over a thin t-shirt is more comfortable than one over a shirt. If you want the look without the heat, our sweatshirts are lighter – though none of them genuinely light up.

The bottom line

If the aim is to be seen, a light-up sweater is hard to beat – but only if the lights are real. Check for a battery pack and a lights-on photo, look for sets if you need a full costume, and don’t trust the word “LED” in a title on its own. Or start with our Light-Up collection, where we’ve already done the checking for you.
